Fulbright-University College London Award
Applications for 2015/16 are now Closed. Applications were due 14 October 2014.
In the 2015/16 cycle, one award will be offered to a US graduate student admitted to UCL to study full-time. Each year, one Fulbright-University College London award is offered to pursue a one-year Master’s degree programme (or the first year of a longer Master’s or PhD programme) in any subject at at University College London (UCL). Students admitted to joint programmes taught at UCL and another university are not eligible for the award.
Applicants with a science, technology, and entrepreneurship background may be interested in the MSc Technology Entrepreneurship programme at UCL and should apply specifically for the Fulbright-UCL Technology Entrepreneurship Award.
Please note: Partner Awards no longer require a letter of affiliation from the international office, department, or supervisor of your intended programme or research project.
Fulbright Awards offer generous financial support for one year of study in the UK. Award funding is intended as a contribution toward the first academic year of tuition fees and general maintenance costs whilst in the UK. Grants are paid in instalments directly to the grantee.
In this Award category, UCL cover the full tuition fee costs. In addition, the grantee will receive £13,500 which is intended as a contribution towards general maintenance costs (accommodation, travel, subsistence, etc) while in the UK.
Cultural Events & Activities
A Fulbright Award is much more than a financial grant – it offers scholars the opportunity to have a transformative cultural and academic experience. Fulbright postgraduates in the UK are invited to participate in a wide range of events, and benefit from a variety of additional opportunities organised by the Fulbright Commission. An annual 3-day Orientation takes place in mid-September in London; a 4-day Fulbright Forum highlights a specific place or region of the UK each January (Bristol and Cardiff in 2013); and a farewell ‘End-cap’ weekend is planned around each 4th of July weekend (Edinburgh in 2013).
European Fulbright Conferences
Postgraduates are also invited to attend annual conferences hosted by several European Fulbright Commissions, including: the Seminar on the EU and NATO held in Belgium, the annual Fulbright Workshop held in Berlin, and/or the Fulbright Northern Ireland Interchanges Seminar.
Fulbright grantees also benefit from organisational memberships and affiliations, including The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce (RSA), The Royal Oak Foundation (The National Trust), and The English-Speaking Union (ESU), and are invited to participate as a judge in the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters competition, and attend lectures at Gresham College (est. 1597) in London. Grantees also receive a free Elsevier scholar support package, which includes access to the entire suite of SciVerse products (ScienceDirect, Scopus, Applications), subject-specific databases (Embase, Compendex, BrainNavigator, Reaxys), and a wide range of online journals (including The Lancet). In addition, London-based scholars may wish to apply for housing at the prestigious Goodenough College.
During a Fulbright exchange, postgraduates are matched with a ‘Fulbright Twin’ – a British Fulbright grantee about to study in the US, and/or a mentor from a Fulbright alumni programme.
The benefits of the Fulbright network do not end upon departure from the UK – receiving a Fulbright Award opens many doors and provides unparalleled global networking opportunities. Over 300,000 Fulbright Awards have been given since the Programme’s inception, and alumni have the opportunity to stay engaged through our extensive alumni networks, including the UK Fulbright alumni network. Alumni also remain connected to the Programme through on-going social and cultural events, volunteer opportunities, and mentoring schemes.
The Fulbright Awards Programme is looking not only for academic excellence, but also:
• demonstrable ambassadorial skills with evidence of cultural sensitivity and a genuine desire to learn more about the United Kingdom and share with British citizens aspects of American culture,
• experience and interest in a range of extracurricular and community activities,
• leadership potential, and
• a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and give back to your home country upon returning.
In addition, all candidates must meet the minimum eligibility for this Award category:
• US citizen resident anywhere except the United Kingdom, and
• hold or expect to receive a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent professional training or experience) in a relevant area before departure to the UK.
Applications are reviewed by several organisations, including the Fulbright Scholarship Board, the Institute of International Education (IIE), and the Fulbright Commission. Selection committees and interview panels will be looking for clear reasons for selecting the chosen UK programme and institution. As a publicly-funded organisation, the Fulbright Awards Programme expects candidates to conduct a thorough university search and to identify institutions and programmes which are a strong fit for their academic, personal and professional goals.
As the aim of a Fulbright exchange is to foster cultural understanding between the US and UK, some preference will be given to applicants who do not have extensive (6+ months) experience in the UK. We still encourage candidates with extensive UK experience to apply, and to explain in the application how further experience in the UK will fulfil the Fulbright mission and will not be a duplication of prior visits. Dual US-UK citizens are eligible to apply in this Award category, however, some preference will be given to those without extensive experience of the UK.
Those resident in the UK may not apply in this Award category.
Awards are not available for peripatetic visits or attendance at conferences only, nor for projects based outside of the United Kingdom.
Non-US citizens must apply for Fulbright scholarships through the office in their country of citizenship (see http://fulbright.state.gov/participating-countries.html). If in the UK, an Advisory Service is located in the Fulbright Commission office which allows individuals to research opportunities for studying in the US. (NB: This office does not provide advice on completing Fulbright Award applications.)
Making an application
The Fulbright application is similar to, but separate from an application to a university or academic institution. Candidates choose and apply to the university(ies) and/or academic programme(s) in the UK they wish to attend directly and independently. Please refer to the timeline to see when to apply to Fulbright, as this may differ from the timeline for applying to academic programmes, universities, and institutions. A Fulbright Award is contingent upon gaining acceptance to the chosen UK institution and/or programme.
The Institute of International Education (IIE) facilitates the Fulbright application process, including the online application. You will be able to log in and out of your online Fulbright application account and will not be required to complete the Fulbright application in one sitting.
The online application is used by Fulbright Commissions worldwide. Each Commission sets its own policies and procedures with country-specific information for making an application for a Fulbright Award in their country. It is imperative that you read the Terms and Conditions on this website before submitting your application.
Following the application deadline and subsequent review of applications, successful applicants may be invited for telephone interviews by the Fulbright Commission (please see the timeline). Telephone interviews will be held on the indicated date(s) only and may not be rescheduled.
