The Study of the U.S. Institute for European Student Leaders on Social Entrepreneurship will examine social entrepreneurship in the United States, including the development, history, challenges, and successes of U.S. social enterprises.
The program will be interactive and experiential, and will combine classroom instruction with panel discussions, business visits, and volunteer opportunities. The Institute will give participants a foundation in how to employ entrepreneurial skills to address social issues and will provide opportunities to meet with American local community leaders.
The Institute may address topics such as business ethics, negotiations, emerging markets and risk analysis, microfinance, corporate social responsibility, strategic business planning and innovation, and women and minorities in entrepreneurship.
The academic residency will be complemented by an educational tour that will take participants to another area of the U.S. where they will meet with local, state, private, and not-for-profit organizations working in the field. The Institute will then conclude with a visit to Washington, D.C. The Institute on Social Entrepreneurship will be hosted by the University of Tennessee - Chattanooga, pending the availability of funds and ECA award approval.

The SUSI will cover all participant costs. This includes:
Program Funding: FHI 360 will arrange and pay for participants’ international travel costs and travel allowances within set limits.
Housing and Meal Arrangements: Housing will be in shared university dorms on campus with common bathrooms. Participants may be expected to share a room with another student of the same gender. Most meals will be provided at campus facilities, though participants may have access to a kitchen to cook some meals on their own.
Health Benefits: All participants will receive the Department of State’s coverage of $100,000 with a $25 co-pay for the duration of the program. Pre-existing conditions are not covered. Information on the health benefit program may be found online at usdos.sevencorners.com.
Special Programmes do not preclude participants from applying for a Fulbright Award later in their academic career. The summer institutes are intentionally designed in such a way that allows participants to go back to the USA at postgraduate or postdoctoral level as a Fulbright Student or Scholar.
The Institutes are open to students in all courses of study. Individuals interested in participating must meet the following eligibility requirements. Candidates must:

This programme is only open to UK undergraduate students (with at least one year of university study remaining) in summer 2015.

Non-UK citizens are required to apply through the Commission or US Embassy in their country of citizenship. Dual UK-EU citizens must apply in the country in which they currently reside; if not resident in either country then applications must be made through the Commission in the country in which they have resided for the longest period of time. US nationals, those with dual US-UK citizenship, persons holding permanent residency ‘green cards’ and those resident in the US may not apply.
In making these awards the Commission is looking not only for academic excellence but a focused application, a range of extracurricular and community activities, an indication of ambassadorial skills, a desire to further the Fulbright Programme and a plan to give back to your home country upon returning.
All participants will be required to obtain a J-1 visa prior to traveling to the United States. The US Department of State will issue the relevant paperwork, and the Fulbright Commission will arrange the visa interview. Participants must return to their home country at the conclusion of the program; it is not possible to participants to remain in the USA at the end of programme for personal travel.
Individuals from a broad range of ethnic, religious, geographic, and socio-economic backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Accommodations will be made in each institute for students with disabilities, as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

3. Send a copy of your transcripts: Transcripts need to be attached to the online application in the form of a PDF. Please note that we request official transcripts, however, if this is not possible due to financial or other reasons we will accept unofficial transcripts.
Applications will be short-listed and successful applicants will be invited to interview in February. Interviews will only be held on these two days and may not be rescheduled. All interviews must be in-person, without exception; the Fulbright Commission will not conduct telephone interviews for this award category.

The selection committee will be comprised of Fulbright Commission staff and on occasion representatives from a relevant field, academics, US Embassy and/or Consulate representatives and Fulbright alumni.

Care will be taken to ensure that any special requirements regarding diet, daily worship, housing, and medical care are satisfied. Please note that this Institute will take place during Ramadan. While the host institution will make every effort to accommodate participants who are fasting, participants should be made aware of the rigorous nature of the Institute and the expectation that the success of the Institute depends on their full participation.
Program Requirements and Restrictions: Participants are expected to fully participate in the academic program. They should attend all lectures and organized activities, and complete assigned readings. Candidates should be made aware that the Institute is very intensive and that there will be little time for personal pursuits unrelated to the program.
Under no circumstances are participants allowed to arrive in the U.S. prior to the start date of the Institute or remain in the U.S. after its end date. Similarly, participants will not be permitted to leave the Institute to visit relatives or friends while in the U.S. If a relative or friend wishes to visit them, it will be addressed on a case by case basis, in consultation with the ECA program officer and the host institution. Participants are required to return to their home countries immediately following the end of the Institute.
Violations of program rules, host institution rules, or local, state or federal laws can be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program.
English Language Ability: All candidates should be proficient in English so that they can actively participate in the academic program. Host institutions will take into account that the level of comprehension and speaking ability of students may vary, and will prepare lectures and discussions that meet the highest academic standards while using language appropriate for students where English is their second or third language.
