Public Ivies

Coined in the 1980s, a Public Ivy is a public or state university offering just as prestigious and rigorous an education as the Ivy League and other ‘brand name’ private institutions, but with lower costs of attendance.

There are now over 30 Public Ivies. The original eight listed in Richard Moll’s 1985 book, Public Ivies: A Guide to America's Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities, are:

  • College of William & Mary
  • Miami University (Oxford, Ohio)
  • University of California
  • University of Michigan
  • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
  • University of Texas at Austin
  • University of Vermont
  • University of Virginia
